Community for Change Hosts Monthly Mutual Aid Markets Across Montgomery County
We know these are uncertain times. Families are feeling the strain of rising costs, deepening inequality, and government systems stretched thin. But we also know that people have always been the most powerful resource we have. That’s the heart of our work: connecting neighbors, building local power, and creating systems of mutual support that remind us we are not alone, and we can take care of each other.
What’s a Mutual Aid Market?
A community-driven marketplace where everything is rooted in care, not commerce. Neighbors exchange what they have, share what they know, and leave with more than they came with whether that’s food, art, clothes, books, or connection.
These markets are about building an economy of solidarity; a living reminder that we can meet our needs together. None of us knows what the next few months will bring, but these gatherings will serve as anchor points to meet the needs of the community as they arise.
Markets Will Include:
-
- Goods Swap: Sharing of specific goods like art supplies, books, or household items.
- Food Sharing: Tables of homegrown, home-cooked, or community-donated food.
- Skill Sharing: Mini-clinics, workshops, lessons, or professional advice shared among neighbors.
- Art: Local artists, musicians, and poets creating or performing on site.
- Resources: Local organizations and initiatives connecting people with support and opportunities.
- Community: A space to gather, connect, and remember that we belong to one another.
These markets aren’t about giving things away; they are about sharing what we have and finding new value in what already exists. It’s a circle, not a drop-off. Bring something you no longer need, and take something home that speaks to you. Everyone gives, everyone receives.
Think of it as exchanging gifts between neighbors. Whatever you bring should be clean, useful, and in good condition. Something you’d proudly pass along to a friend.
At the end of the day, any leftover items will be shared with local organizations, continuing the cycle of care that these markets are built on.
Get Involved
Every market is built by the gifts our neighbors bring: skills, wisdom, creativity, and care. If you’d like to lead a mini-clinic, share professional advice, teach a craft, perform, or represent a local organization offering resources and support, we’d love to include you. Fill out our short interest form to get involved and help build the next Mutual Aid Market in your community.
